Two temples, one caldera, and the half of Bali nobody queues for
Java holds the monuments and the volcano. Bali holds the ritual and the coast. Ten days is enough for both if the driving is planned by somebody who knows that 87 km on this island is two and a half hours.

Most Bali itineraries sold in the four markets we work for are Bali alone, with the island split into three bases and half the week spent in the car between them. This one gives the first four days to Java, where the buildings are, and then puts Bali into two places instead of four.
The arithmetic behind that decision is worth stating. Ubud to Amed is 87 km on the map and two and a half to two and three-quarter hours on the road, longer if you leave after ten, and longer again if your room is at one of the outlying villages such as Lipah or Tulamben. Every Bali route that promises you Ubud, Canggu, Amed and Uluwatu in a week is quietly spending your holiday on that road.
Nine nights, then, and two long moves: Yogyakarta to the caldera, and the caldera to Bali. Everything else is short.
Day by day
Neither the American, British, EU nor Australian passport is on Indonesia’s visa-free list. You buy an e-VOA at IDR 500,000 for 30 days, applied for in advance on the official immigration portal or on arrival, extendable once for the same amount to a maximum of 60 days. Bali then charges a separate tourist levy of IDR 150,000 per person, once, for the whole visit. It is cashless only — card, bank transfer, virtual account or QRIS, through the provincial Love Bali system or at a counter at the airport. We send you both links before you fly; neither is included in the price and neither should be bought from a third-party site.
Indonesia has more than seventy active volcanoes and the disruption they cause is to aircraft rather than to itineraries. Anak Krakatau, in the Sunda Strait, cancelled or rescheduled 108 Bali-linked flights on 6 and 7 September 2026 and closed the Jakarta airports until 08:59 on 7 September. Bali’s own airport stayed open throughout. This is why we do not book you onto a same-day international connection out of Denpasar, and why the last two nights of this route sit within reach of the airport rather than on another island.
Bromo sits inside the Bromo Tengger Semeru national park, and Semeru — a separate mountain inside the same park — has been at the top alert level with a 5 km exclusion zone and an extended river-valley danger area. Nothing on this itinerary enters it. The crater rim walk at Bromo is a different mountain and a different question, and we check the official monitoring service the week before you travel rather than the day you arrive.
Arrive Yogyakarta
Most people reach Yogyakarta through Jakarta or Singapore and land in the afternoon. The new airport is well outside the city and the transfer is the longest thing about the day; nothing else is scheduled.
If there is light left, the walk that makes sense is Kotagede, the old silver quarter, where the lanes are too narrow for cars and the workshops still beat sheet metal by hand. Yogyakarta is a university city with a sultan in it and it does not perform for visitors, which is the pleasant part.
Borobudur, and the plain it sits on
Out early for Borobudur, one Buddhist monument raised over a natural hill and arranged as a diagram you are meant to walk: square terraces of narrative relief below, then the circular ones carrying perforated stupas, then nothing at all at the top. The reliefs are the reason to go with a guide rather than alone; they are read clockwise and they run for kilometres.
Access to the upper structure is controlled separately from entry to the site, and both the rule and the foreign ticket price have been changed more than once in recent years. We confirm the position with the park authority in the week before you travel, quote it to you then and add it to the invoice. Anybody publishing a fixed 2026 figure for the climb has copied it from a source that could not check it either.
The afternoon is the kraton, the sultan’s walled palace, and a batik workshop where the wax is applied with a tjanting rather than a stamp, which is the difference between a two-week cloth and a two-hour one.
Prambanan and a wayang night
Prambanan is the Hindu answer to Borobudur, built within a few decades of it and on the other side of the city: tall, thin, vertical towers rather than a terraced hill, dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma, and still visibly under repair from the 2006 earthquake. Go late in the afternoon rather than the middle of the day; the stone is dark and it takes low sun well.
Nearby and usually skipped: the Ratu Boko site on the ridge above, which is not a temple but a walled compound of gates and bathing pools, and the quietest thing on the plain. In the evening there is a wayang kulit shadow performance if you want it. The full versions run all night and nobody expects you to stay for all of it.
East to the Tengger caldera
The long day. Yogyakarta to the Bromo rim is a full day’s travel across Java, done by a combination of train and road because the train is faster, flatter and more comfortable than the trunk road, and because the road out of Surabaya into the mountains is the part worth having a driver for.
You arrive at Cemoro Lawang, a village standing on the lip of the caldera, in the late afternoon. It is cold after dark, the accommodation is basic by the standards of the rest of this journey, and the reason to be there is that you are already on the rim when everybody else is still driving up it at four in the morning.
Bromo at dawn, then Bali
Up at 03:00 for a jeep across the sand sea. The classic viewpoint on Mount Penanjakan gives you the whole caldera with Bromo smoking in the middle of it and Semeru throwing ash behind, and it is busy; the alternative viewpoints on the same ridge are ten minutes further and hold a fraction of the people. Afterwards the crater itself, up a staircase from the sand, with a scarf over your face because the sulphur is real.
Park entry for foreign visitors is IDR 220,000 on a weekday and IDR 320,000 at the weekend, which includes the compulsory accident insurance and does not include the jeep. Both are in your price. Back to the guesthouse for breakfast, then down to Surabaya and the flight to Bali, landing in the afternoon and reaching Ubud in the early evening.
Ubud on foot
A walking morning rather than a driving one, which is the whole argument for staying in Ubud for three nights. The Campuhan ridge at first light, then down into the Wos valley: rice terraces that are still farmed on the subak system, an irrigation cooperative run by the temples rather than by the state and working on the same principles since the ninth century.
Afternoon at Goa Gajah and the Pejeng valley, where the temples are older and emptier than the ones on the coach circuit. Ubud town itself is best taken in the evening, after the day trippers have gone back to the south and the gamelan starts up in three courtyards at once.
The water temples, or nothing at all
A free day with one strong suggestion. North of Ubud the road climbs to Lake Batur and the crater rim at Kintamani, and on the way sits Tirta Empul, where Balinese Hindus have bathed in a spring-fed purification pool since the tenth century. It is a working religious site and visitors may enter the water, with a sarong, in the correct order, behind people who are there to pray. If that framing does not appeal, do not go; watching from the wall is fine too.
The province publishes a code of conduct for visitors covering dress and behaviour at temples, and it is enforced. Breaching it can end in deportation and has, publicly, several times. Your guide will tell you what to do at each gate before you walk through it.
Ubud to the east coast
Away by 08:30, because this transfer is the one that ruins Bali itineraries: 87 km, two and a half hours at best, and the traffic east of Klungkung builds through the morning. We break it at Tirta Gangga, the old water palace, and again at Tenganan, a walled Bali Aga village that predates the Javanese courts and weaves the double-ikat cloth that takes years per piece.
Amed is not one place but a string of villages along a black sand coast with Agung behind it and no surf. The water is flat, the fishing boats go out at dawn, and the wartime wreck at Tulamben lies in shallow enough water to snorkel from the beach.

Nothing scheduled. Snorkelling or a first dive on the wreck at Tulamben, which lies a short swim from the shore in water shallow enough that certification is optional for the top of it; a boat out at six with the fishermen; or a day that involves neither.
This is the only part of the journey with no monument in it, and it is there on purpose. Nine nights that end with a temple leave people tired; nine nights that end here send them home rested.
Depart from Bali
Amed to Denpasar airport is the morning transfer taken in reverse and then some, and the last stretch through the southern sprawl is where the time goes. We build a wide margin into it and we ask you not to book a departure before noon.
If your flight is in the evening, we hold the room until midday and stop for a long lunch somewhere on the coast on the way down rather than sitting in the terminal.

A car and driver in Bali runs somewhere between USD 35 and USD 100 for a full day of up to about ten hours, fuel and parking included, and the top of that range is what July to September costs. Two travellers pay for that vehicle between them and five split it, which is why the two-traveller column sits 36 per cent above the five-to-eight one. Hotels move the number far less.
Comfortable is the valley hotel outside Ubud, a good room above the water at Amed and a solid city hotel in Yogyakarta. Considered buys the small number of properties in Bali that justify their rate — nearly all of them in the Ubud valleys and on the east coast — and changes nothing at Cemoro Lawang, where the choice is a cold guesthouse on the rim or a comfortable hotel two hours below it, and the rim wins.
Two government charges sit outside our price by design, so that you pay them at the stated rate and not at ours: the e-VOA at IDR 500,000 and the Bali levy at IDR 150,000. The journey in pictures
Who this journey is wrong for
- Anyone who will not get up at three in the morning. The Bromo dawn is the single reason the Java half of this route exists, and there is no later version of it; by nine the caldera is full of cloud and jeeps.
- Travellers who want beach clubs, Seminyak or Canggu. This journey ends on a black sand coast with fishing boats on it and no nightlife at all, and the southern strip is two to three hours in the wrong direction from every night we have booked.
- Anyone unwilling to spend one night in a plain room. Cemoro Lawang sits on a cold volcanic rim and the accommodation there is basic in every grade we sell. The alternative is a 03:00 departure from a hotel two hours below, which is a worse night, not a better one.
- People booking December to February. Bali and Java are wettest from November to March, heaviest between December and February, and the Bromo viewpoints are in cloud more mornings than not. The route runs, and we will tell you what you are buying.
- Anybody who needs a guaranteed same-day onward connection out of Denpasar. Volcanic ash closed Jakarta’s airports and disrupted 108 Bali-linked flights over two days in September 2026, and that pattern repeats somewhere in the archipelago most years.

The seventeen-day route adds Flores and Komodo, which is the right upgrade if the sea is the point rather than the buildings — and it is the version to ask for from April 2026 onward, because South Padar now runs on a 1,000-visitor daily cap split into three timed sessions and that has to be booked into the itinerary rather than bought at the jetty. What we would not do is add Komodo to these ten days. It costs two flights and two nights and leaves you with less of everything.

What does it cost to enter Indonesia and Bali?

We send both official links with your documents, because the sites that charge a handling fee on top rank well and are not official.
Can we climb to the top of Borobudur?
Access to the upper structure is controlled separately from entry to the site, and the arrangement has been changed and re-priced more than once in recent years. We book it where the rules of the day allow it, and your guide is briefed on what is open on the morning you go.
What we will not do is print a figure for it on a public page. The reliable number moves at short notice, so we confirm it with the park authority in the week before you travel, quote it to you then and add it to your invoice. An operator quoting a fixed 2026 climb price without that caveat has copied it from a blog.
Why only two bases in Bali?
Because Bali is small and slow. Ubud to Amed is 87 km and realistically two and a half hours or more, and adding fifteen to thirty minutes for the villages beyond Amed itself; the road south to Uluwatu from Ubud is no faster in the afternoon.
Three or four bases in a week means three or four of those transfers, each one eating a morning. Two bases gives you three nights of walking country around Ubud and two nights of flat water on the east coast, and one drive between them, taken early.
Is a volcano going to cancel our trip?
The risk is to flights rather than to the itinerary. Indonesia has more than seventy active volcanoes; in the first week of September 2026, Anak Krakatau closed Jakarta’s airports until 08:59 on the 7th and disrupted 108 Bali-linked flights, while Bali’s own airport stayed open throughout.
We plan around it rather than promising it will not happen: no same-day international connections out of Denpasar, refundable rates on the Bali nights, and a check of the official monitoring service before you travel. If ash closes the airport we re-book, and this is precisely the kind of event your insurance is for.
